Overview

Reins of Galakras

Reins of Galakras is a flying proto-dragon mount, the grandchild of the legendary Galakrond, one of the most famous proto-dragons of Azeroth. In appearance it is a massive red lizard with black racing stripes and a thick trail of black smoke that streams behind it in flight.

The item teaches the summoning spell "Spawn of Galakras" — a full-fledged flying mount. The mount was added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion and remains in the game unchanged: in the current The War Within (patch 11.1, 2026) it is still available as a reward for the Siege of Orgrimmar raid meta-achievement.

With the arrival of TWW and the ability to fly across all zones, this proto-dragon is once again at the peak of its popularity: it is easy to obtain solo at level 80, and its appearance stands out noticeably in the sky of any capital hub.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Striking look. Fiery-red armor, spikes, and a trail of black smoke make this mount one of the most recognizable proto-dragons in the game.
  • Lore. A direct descendant of Galakras — a boss from the Siege of Orgrimmar raid — and a distant relative of Galakrond. An excellent choice for collectors of "dragon" themes.
  • Accessibility in 2026. The raid has long since fallen behind in level: a level 80 character knocks down every boss in just one or two hits, which means the farm itself takes 40–60 minutes on the first run.
  • Mount counter. Grants a tick toward the "Reckless Collector" achievement and bonuses to mount-count achievements.
  • Rarity. Even though it is not hard to get, it has fewer owners than mounts from the shop or subscription — the mount stands out in the capitals.

Requirements and How to Get There

  • Character level: 80 (recommended so you can clear the raid risk-free).
  • Expansion/patch: any, starting from Mists of Pandaria; in 2026 it is current on TWW, patch 11.1.
  • Difficulty: to obtain the mount, "Flexible" (LFR does not count toward the meta-achievement), "Normal," or "Heroic" will work. Normal is recommended — all achievements trigger on it, and the bosses do not turn into a wall.
  • Flying: the flying skill is only needed for moving around in the game; the mount is not used inside the raid.
  • Entrance location: Vale of Eternal Blossoms, Pandaria. The portal to the raid is at the Gates of Orgrimmar (coordinates approximately 74, 43). You can get there via the portal from Orgrimmar (at Vallok) or via the Path to Pandaria from the capitals.
  • Group size: it is best to go solo at level 80. A group is not needed and only gets in the way: some achievements require full control over the battlefield.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Preparing Your Character

  • Get your character to level 80 and assemble any set of TWW gear (700+ ilvl is more than enough).
  • Make sure you already have the "Pandaria Flight Path" or the ability to fly in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms — this will save time when moving between halls.
  • Bring along food for quick self-healing and a teleport scroll to the capital in case of a mistake.

Step 2. Entering the Raid

  • Open the dungeon finder menu and select "Siege of Orgrimmar" on "Normal" difficulty.
  • Travel to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, walk to the raid entrance at the Gates of Orgrimmar, and step inside.
  • Inside, the instance is divided into four wings: "Vale of Eternal Sorrows," "Gates of Orgrimmar," "The Underhold," "Downfall."

Step 3. Killing Bosses and Collecting Special Achievements

For the meta-achievement you need all 14 achievements. The main ones on Normal difficulty:

  1. Enough Tears — kill Immerseus after destroying 10 "Tears of the Vale."
  2. The Relay — on the Norushen fight, pass the Sign of Suffering to 5 different players. In solo mode this is not directly possible, but at level 80 the achievement is granted when the key conditions are completed.
  3. No One Gets Through — destroy the Amalgam of Corruption without letting any "unleashed corruption" merge in.
  4. Tame Your Pride — kill Sha of Pride while no one has gained stacks of "Pride" from the manifestations.
  5. I'm Perfect! — in the fight against the Paragons of the Golden Lotus, try on three different Paragon guises.
  6. Strike! — on Garrosh, destroy the Iron Stars by stunning the Siege Engineers.

And eight more achievements, one per boss. Most trigger automatically with a standard boss kill at level 80, while the rest require specific actions — check the list in the achievements window after each fight.

Step 4. Claiming the Reward

  • After completing all 14 achievements, you will automatically be credited with the "Glory of the Orgrimmar Raider" meta-achievement.
  • Within a few minutes, an in-game mail will arrive from Vol'jin Heart of the Wolf (for the Horde) or Varian Wrynn (for the Alliance) with the "Reins of Galakras" item.
  • Use the item — the summoning spell will appear in your mount collection.

Farming Optimization

  • Take the entry quest. Before starting the raid, make sure the Pandaria adventures are unlocked — this gives access to the needed teleports.
  • Check achievements before the pull. Many achievements break if you start the fight incorrectly. Read the achievement description before attacking the boss.
  • Reset the raid on a mistake. If you missed an achievement, leave the raid, perform a reset through the menu, and re-enter. The reset is saved only for the next week, so do the entire achievement run in a single visit.
  • Don't go into LFR. The "Raid Finder" mode does not count the achievements on the list — it is a waste of time.
  • Practice on Garrosh in advance. The final boss is the most demanding when it comes to timing achievements. Watch a recording of a run on Normal difficulty so you don't slip up in the first phase.
  • Clear it in one day. At level 80, the whole raid is cleared in 40–60 minutes if you don't get distracted.

Tips

1

Bring a scroll for a quick return to the capital: it will come in handy if you forget an achievement condition mid-raid and want to re-read the guide.

2

If you have two weekly lockouts, use "Clear all saves" on the NPC outside the raid — this lets you enter again.

3

For the Sha of Pride and Norushen achievements, turn off all of your pet's auto-attacks: they can disrupt the conditions.

4

After getting the mount, go into the mount collection, hover over "Spawn of Galakras," and turn on the smoke effect — it looks brighter than that of most proto-dragons.

5

If you collect appearances, head to the transmogrification catalog right after the raid — the "Siege of Orgrimmar" drops Tier 16 level 2 sets that pair perfectly with the mount's design.

6

For achievements requiring "different players," Blizzard has simplified the conditions at level 80: most are counted automatically on a solo kill. Still, check the description of each entry in the achievements window.
